The official history of Bangladesh can be traced back to the 1st millennium CE when the region was settled by Dravidian, Austroasiatics, Tibeto-Burmans, and Indo-Aryans in succession. The region was a prosperous trading center during the 1st millennium CE due to its location at the confluence of major rivers.
The region was ruled by the Maurya Empire, the Gupta Empire, the Bengal Sultanate, the Mughal Empire, and the British Empire before gaining independence in 1947. Bangladesh was formerly known as East Pakistan, a province of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 resulted in the independence of Bangladesh.
The country has a rich cultural heritage and is home to numerous World Heritage Sites. Bangladesh is a founding member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The country is also a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Developing 8 Countries, the OIC, and the United Nations.
The economy of Bangladesh is the 47th largest in the world in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), and 29th largest in terms of nominal GDP. The GDP growth rate of Bangladesh averaged 6.
